Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in hills just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their valour," he commented. "Including them were numerous British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate militants who endanger our way of life, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
