A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such drugs need to be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Doctors believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated weight return.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the medication report a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if something activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
