Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the right to challenge particular rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
